Amsterdam criteria

The Amsterdam criteria are used to identify families with Lynch syndrome (also called HNPCC) based on their family history. 

Nonetheless, only about 40% of HNPCC affected families fit these criteria. This means that the Amsterdam criteria cannot tell for sure if your family has (or not) the disease.

They are, however, a good indicator for the need to be genetically tested

  • At least 3 relatives with HNPCC*, with one of them being a first-degree relative of the other 2;
  • At least two successive generation affected;
  • At least one of the relatives with an HNPCC* linked cancer diagnosed before the age of 50

*HNPCC-related cancers - colorectal, endometrial, small intestine, and urothelium (kidneys, bladder and urethra) cancers
